Borneo

Jane's verdict

Borneo is one of the world’s most stunning oases of rare wildlife - home to orang-utans, clouded leopards, fish eagles and pygmy elephants. Whether you experience a night safari or help with tree planting, it's a thrilling destination, not forgetting the boutique hideaways of Malaysia's Tioman Island for some beachfront R ‘n’ R.

Borneo has all the ingredients for the perfect adventure honeymoon – stay put and explore Borneo itself or combine it with Peninsular Malaysia for more of an adventure/beach honeymoon.

We recommend starting your Borneo honeymoon with time in the colonial riverside city of Kuching, with its temples and history, fantastic restaurants and pretty waterfront.

Whilst in Sarawak, visit the Bako National Park with its incredible trails, wildlife, waterfalls and mangrove forests. We can also arrange a visit to the traditional long houses of the Iban tribes, descendants of Borneo’s headhunters.

The highlight of any visit to Borneo is, of course, the orang-utans. Spend some time visiting the sanctuaries in Sepilok or Semenggok where they rehabilitate orphaned orang-utans.

Extend your honeymoon with a visit to Sabah, home to the Danum Valley and Kinabatangan River, two of the Asia’s richest wildlife habitats. Trek through the jungle on foot or take a private longboat up narrow rivers for the chance to see monkeys, pygmy elephants and amazing bird life and take a night safari in an open-top 4WD or your boat.

To relax at the end of your trip, we recommend a stay in JapaMala, a boutique hotel on Tioman Island where you can enjoy the spa, snorkel, scuba dive or simply relax on the white sandy beach.
