    Cycling in Italy

    Jane's verdict:

Couples that play together, stay together. If you share a love of cycling, Headwater has come up with inspiring routes, some off-road. Romantic itineraries include gastronomic routes in Piedmont and Chianti. And the best thing is, your bags are taken from hotel to hotel for you. They’ll even get the wine orders in.

    Headwater says

If you’re tempted by the idea of some gentle activity on your honeymoon but want to keep yourselves to yourselves, then our independent cycling holidays provide a perfect solution.

    • Charming hotels
    • Great value
    • Self-guided tours

We’ve got all sorts of itineraries throughout Europe but, for foodies especially, we think that the Gastronomic Barolo route is just about the most romantic.

Based in the beautiful Italian region of Piedmont, you will pedal through world-famous vineyards such as Barolo and Barbaresco, sun-drenched hamlets and honey-coloured squares as you make your way gently from one hotel to the next.

The places we’ve chosen for you to stay in are mostly intimate 4 star family-run hotels from an 11th-century country house with a pool with breathtaking views to a 19th century family villa with its own frescoed chapel.

Special gastronomic menus are included each evening, enjoyed either in your hotel or a nearby restaurant, and you’ll have lots of opportunities to try some superb wines at very reasonable prices.

As this is an independent holiday, you’ll cycle at your own pace – just the two of you with no groups or leaders. Behind the scenes, our staff will move your luggage between hotels each day.

This 8-night Gastronomic Barolo tour of Italy costs from £3,300 to £3,800 per couple including bikes, route notes and maps as well as half-board accommodation, flights and transfers.

Other destinations include France, Spain, Portugal, Gozo, Austria, Switzerland and the UK. Check out this review of cycling and walking in Gozo by 101 Holidays’ Catherine Leech.
