Honeymoon in the Swiss Alps

St Moritz honeymoon

By Jane Anderson, Editor of 101 Honeymoons

With peak wedding season approaching, you may not have booked your summer honeymoon yet. I expect that most couples associate the Swiss Alps with winter ski, but having been there recently, I can honestly say, this is a fabulous choice for a summer honeymoon if you like breathtaking lakeland scenery, mountain treks, luxury spas and special food and wine.

Top of my list is St Moritz – world renowned as a chic ski mecca and home to the Cresta Run and an Olympic Bob Sleigh, yet first popular in the 19th century as a summer well-being spot for its therapeutic mountain air and luminous turquoise-green lake which these days gets you reaching for your iPhone to take a thousand photos.

The journey to tiny St Moritz is full of old-school romance. Fly to Zurich and board the train to St Moritz (just under 4 hours) past soaring Alps and sparkling lakes. Or you can catch the Glacier Express for the panoramic trip from Zermatt. St Moritz has one of the highest concentrations of designer shops in the world (30 within 300m) including Marni, Tom Ford and Chanel as well as traditional bakeries and chocolatiers such as Hanselmann, known for its nutty pastries.

But the focus is on the natural world with life-enhancing mountain treks and swimming in the crystal clear waters of Lake St Moritz. Neighbouring Lake Silvaplana is renowned for its world-class kite surfing in summer when the place turns into a Swiss Hawaii.

For a special treat, book into Hotel Kulm, the oldest hotel in St Moritz in plum position overlooking Lake St Moritz.

Kulm Hotel St MoritzKulm Hotel St Moritz - Private Spa SuiteKulm Hotel St Moritz - junior suite

It may be the grande dame, yet it’s most up to date in terms of modern luxuries including a spectacular new £8million spa where couples can enjoy the vast pool with underwater music, and outdoor heated pool with water jets. Book the candlelit couples spa suite with its huge picture window overlooking lake and mountains, tasteful heated waterbed for snuggling up with a glass of champagne and choice of healthy nibbles, plus a double waterjet bath pool, sauna and steam room all to yourselves.

Kulm Spa St Moritz - quiet time for two(2000x1331)

Most of the treatments use organic products, many from the Alps. I tried the Alpine honey scrub with Mountain Crystals which invigorates the skin, followed by the Energy Lift by Ericson Laboratoire – a fabulous facial.

If you want some fitness advise, make an appointment with Joachim Potschger, known as ‘JoPo’ who trains boxers and Formula 1 drivers with his “Persofit’ concept which covers cardio training, nutritional counselling and deep relaxation.

As for sleeping, book a suite overlooking the lake if you can. Most rooms have fabulous cedar wood panels carved with stars and swirls giving off the most wonderful aroma that’s deeply relaxing. This hotel is so five-star there’s both a soap and a pillow menu.

Don’t miss a memorable ‘Vital Dine Around’ dinner with wine tasting and chef table experience which begins with a walk through the back of house down a candlelit municipal stairs to the hotel’s wine cellar, candlelit for an atmospheric and unpretentious wine tasting with the Master Sommelier, Benjamin Wolf.

Once you’ve sampled some fine Swiss wines and tasty canapés its on to the spotless kitchens with impressive cake making machines from 100 years ago to an oversized, high wooden table laid beautifully for your dinner, whilst you watch the chefs at work. After dinner there’s the Miles Davis Jazz Lounge for live music.

Kulm Hotel St. Moritz - Chef's Table

In summer, couples can try paddle boarding and kite surfing on the lake, or simply take romantic strolls or bike ride round its shore. A must is a hike on more than 500km of marked trails or you can simply lie back on your hotel balcony with a glass of bubbly and enjoy the views. Pop into the Dracula Club in summer, a legendary private members club, open to non-members from mid July to mid August during the Jazz Festival. And don’t miss the garlic glitter ball. There’s also opera in the Grand Restaurant during July. Who needs snow to enjoy the Swiss Alps!

How to book it

A ‘Summer Romantic’ package at Hotel Kulm costs from £820 per person including 3 nights half-board with gourmet dine around, a 4-course gourmet dinner in Kronenstübli, one-star Michelin restaurant in nearby sister hotel Grand Hotel Kronenhof, 2 hours’ exclusive use of the Kulm’s private spa suite: Hydrojet bath, waterbed and bio-sauna, sea salt peeling in the steam bath, a romantic horse carriage through the summer landscape to Lake Staz, afternoon tea in the Kulm lobby, complimentary use of the Kulm Spa and its wellbeing and fitness programme, free use of the Kulm Golf course including driving range and tennis courts and free use of the mountain cable cars in the Engadin/St. Moritz region and public transport in the valley (bus and Rhaetian railway).

Available from 26 June 2013 to 7 September 2013.

Winter sun honeymoons minus jet lag

Coco Ocean, The Gambia

By Jane Anderson, Editor, 101 Honeymoons

I’m often asked for advice on winter sun honeymoons – where can we go for an exotic experience without jet lag and without a long flight to the Indian Ocean, Caribbean or Pacific? Africa is often the answer but not everyone wants to go on safari.

The Gambia, on Africa’s west coast, is a great option – it’s less than 6 hours’ flying time, there’s no time difference, winter sun is guaranteed (with no sticky humidity) and there’s no rainfall to speak of between November and June.

It’s also great value for money and you can enjoy some culture, wildlife and fun adventures in addition to chilling out on the beach.

It’s fair to say that The Gambia has not been renowned for its romantic hotels but it’s worth a second look – there are some gorgeous properties now from boutique lodges to great value all-inclusive beach resorts. The destination specialists, The Gambia Experience, have the pick of them…..

Ngala Lodge is an adults-only hotel with just 18 suites. It’s set in a former colonial mansion with spectacular views from its clifftop position. Steps lead down to the beach and the food is particularly good here. Opt for an Atlantic Suite with its private Jacuzzi and huge picture windows. A week costs from £799pp on a B&B basis.

If your taste is more cool and contemporary, head to Coco Ocean Resort & Spa with its Moroccan-inspired design, stunning beachfront position and excellent Spa, complete with a Moroccan Hammam and Thalasso pool. My pick of the rooms are the Beach Houses, overlooking the beach and boasting a private terrace and garden. International chefs whip up delicious dishes from Morocco, Lebanon and Thailand, even sushi, as well as local and European cuisine. A week costs from £943pp on a B&B basis.

Soak up the spirit of Africa in the Mandina Lodges at Makasuta. You’ll stay in one of the eight lodges – either in the jungle, floating on the River Gambia or in a stilted lodge on the water. You won’t hear much other than the sound of birdsong and chattering monkeys – don’t miss the Sunset Tour, a private boat trip to view the local wildlife, followed by a romantic dinner in the privacy of your lodge. A week costs from £899pp half-board.

All prices include transfers and flights from the UK (The Gambia Experience offers flights from Gatwick, Manchester and Birmingham).

Our friends at The Gambia Experience have a few more romantic tips.

Head out for lunch or dinner in the Calypso Beach Bar, Cape Point – overlooking a natural sea lake, you might just catch a glimpse of local crocodiles whilst chilling out in the shade.

The beaches in The Gambia are vast and rarely if ever feel remotely crowded – however, for a romantic escape, head to one of the more remote beaches such as Sanyang or Gunjar.

For a gracious taste of Gambian hospitality, take in one of the Dinner & Dance Evenings at the long-established Kairaba Hotel in Kololi.

You will need to take anti-malarial precautions but there are no compulsory inoculations – chat to your GP before you travel.

Exclusive and affordable wedding venue in Western Algarve

SONY DSCSONY DSCquinta_hi_res150

By Jane Anderson, editor of 101 Honeymoons

I’m very excited to have discovered Quinta Bonita perched high on the Matos Morenos Hillside in the Western Algarve as it genuinely is a fabulously affordable find when it comes to hiring your own place in the sun for overseas weddings.

Like your very own private white-washed mansion with a hint of rustica, this eight-room hotel is the place to come for a bespoke, intimate wedding without that big resort feel. Your wedding guests will marvel at how you found such a gem just two and a half hours flight from London.

British owners, Chantelle Kortekaas and Fraser Lindsay turned the much loved house, which was Chantelle’s parent’s holiday home where she spent many happy childhood summers, into a luxury boutique hotel in 2010.

As Chantelle explains, “Because we have just eight rooms, it’s both intimate and affordable for exclusive use. It’s essentially a beautiful, big luxury home with the facilities of a five-star hotel. We’ve maintained the laid back and friendly atmosphere so that people instantly feel at home.”

Quinta Bonita can accommodate 18 resident guests and is available for hire on an exclusive basis (for a minimum of three nights) throughout the year at a very reasonable rate – from £2,450. Even when the house is full, there are plenty of special places to hide away with a good book and a glass of chilled white wine or round the gorgeous heated pool with its blue Portuguese tiles.

Weddings or blessings for up to 70 guests are a delight here and usually held on the large flat lawn nestling in the middle of the orchard or the recently created terrace, both beautifully lit at night. Chantelle’s father created the stunning gardens, an oasis of orange trees, rose beds, a statuesque 400-year-old Olive tree and an exquisite Italian garden along with a giant chess set and a lily pond. It all makes a fabulous settings for wedding photographs with beautiful sea views.

Couples can have a Bedouin style marquee set up on the lawn which gives shade from the hot sun in summer. Flexibility is the key with the choice of buffet, bbq or three course sit-down reception. There are beanbags and picnic rugs for a more laid back feel or for fun kids area. Couples choose from a recommended list of caterers and menus are bespoke. Traditional suckling pig is a big favourite.

Chantelle and Fraser offer a five-star personalised service for brides and grooms with a team of professionals including florists, photographers, make up and hair stylists on hand. Chantelle says the makeup artist is superb especially when it comes to soft natural looks.

There are plenty of in-room spa treatments for pre-wedding pampering including massage, facials, manicures and pedicures. There are special packages for mums, daughters and bridesmaids and you can even book a private Yoga or Tai Chi lesson.

Chantelle’s mother created the interiors of the eight suites, all named after local beaches. Couples love Zavial, the Master Suite with its four-poster bed. Honeymoon packages include a romantic dinner hamper for two, French champagne, red roses and hand-made chocolates in your room on arrival.

According to Chantelle, “Many couples seek out the beach that their room is named after and it becomes sentimental to them. And amazingly for Europe, you can still find a deserted beach all to yourselves.”

Many honeymooners take one of Fraser’s gourmet picnic hampers and watch the sun set at Cape St Vincent, the most south-westerly point of Europe, considered to be the world’s end in the Middle Ages.

Fancy dinner in a seaside pod…?

Dine in the Pod!

By Jane Anderson, editor, 101 Honeymoons

The Cary Arms, one of my favourite small hotels in the West Country, is offering a two-night Romantic Hideaway Experience – including a candlelit three-course dinner in the hotel’s funky ‘Pod’.

The package also includes flowers, Champagne and strawberries on arrival, a Yon-Ka Face and Body Glow spa treatment for each of you, breakfast each day – and impossibly beautiful ocean views from your room.

Two nights cost £535 for two people sharing up to April and £635 between May and October 2013 (excludes public holidays).

The Cary Arms is set in Devon’s pretty Babbacombe Bay and has just eight rooms and fab food. Trust me – it’s romantic.

New Colombia honeymoon

Colourful and historic Cartagena

By Jane Anderson, Editor, 101 Honeymoons

Colombia is a hot yet relatively new honeymoon destination, packed with wonderful sights and sites.

This new Colombia honeymoon from luxury specialists, Exsus, is not only a great introduction to one of South America’s lesser known countries, but it’s also full of romance.

Kick off with 2 nights in Bogota, staying at the weirdly-named but seriously chic B.O.G Design hotel. Explore the colonial quarter of La Candeleria, visit the atmospheric salt cathedral at Zipaquirá and soak up the sunset views, cocktail in hand, from the hotel’s rooftop pool.

Next stop is the lush coffee region – the Zona Cafetera – where you’ll stay in the charming, colonial-style finca, Hacienda Bambusa and visit a working coffee finca, explore the stunning landscapes and see some of the region’s exotic birdlife – on horse back if you fancy it.

The walled colonial city of Cartagena, on the shores of the Caribbean, is next with two nights at La Passion, a quirky and historic hotel. In the evenings, you can take a horse and carriage to Cartagena’s many amazing seafood restaurants, before losing yourselves amongst the winding alleys and buzzing salsa bars.

A speedboat ride then takes you to the island of Mucura for four nights’ beachfront R&R in the rustic Punta Faro. Snorkelling, scuba diving and lazing in a hammock is the order of the day as you build up an appetite for a delicious plate of coconut shrimp.

This 12-night honeymoon costs from £3,895 pp including all flights – and there’s an option to extend your honeymoon in Ecuador or the Galapagos. Find out more from Exsus.

New honeymoon in Bolivia

By Jane Anderson, Editor, 101 Honeymoons

South America is on a lot of people’s “hot lists” for 2013, partly due to excitement over the upcoming World Cup in Brazil and the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Intrepid honeymooners should look beyond the obvious destinations and consider Bolivia, where Enchanting Travels promise a combination of authenticity and luxury.

In La Paz, visit the Witches Market where you can ogle at the more stomach-churning specimens on sale, secure your own private potion or talisman and then head over to the Coca Museum which covers every aspect of the use of coca leaves, both positive and negative, for an insight in to the Bolivian psyche.

Lake Titicaca is the world’s largest high-altitude lake, covering 8,400 square kilometres of water. With ancient ruins and traditional villages dotted around the lakeside, the landscape is Mediterranean in feel but quintessentially Bolivian. Discover rarely-visited Inca ruins around the lakeside town of Copacabana, take a boat out to the Isla del Sol, and explore the surrounding lakeside villages.

The first national park in Bolivia, Sajama, hosts Bolivia’s highest mountain, the snow capped Volcan Sajama at 6,542 metres. Gaze at the stunning geological formations and vegetation, pre-Hispanic cave paintings and burial places. The indigenous population has largely managed to preserve their customs and religious beliefs – it’s fascinating.

The hotels selected by Enchanting Travels are unique and packed with character.

Stay in the brand-new La Paz La Casona Boutique Hotel, a refurbished colonial mansion featuring a blend of traditional Spanish Colonial architecture and contemporary furniture and decor. The adjacent restaurant serves up some of the best food in the city and there are airy terraces, ideal for a refreshing sundowner.

With sweeping views of Lake Titicaca, the Rosario del Lago features Bolivian artwork and ethnic motifs from the Aymara and Quechua cultures. Fresh fish from the lake is a speciality here.

Perfectly positioned for Sajama National Park, Tomarapi Eco Lodge is a joint-venture by a local tourism operator and the local people of the village. Although simple, it is comfortable, quaint and authentic.

Prices start at £2,170 for a 13-night private, tailor-made honeymoon in Bolivia. Find out more from Enchanting Travels and check out the range of hotels in Bolivia.

6 hot honeymoon destinations for 2013

Parik Laxminarayan, founder of Enchanting-Travels, has been scouring the world to find his hot honeymoon destinations for 2013. Here’s his selection – any of them on your hot list….?

1. Bolivia

This is South America’s hidden gem and it’s set to make its mark on the tourist scene in 2013. Bolivia packs a massive punch with salt flats, rain forests and mountains all within a rich cultural context.

2. Argentina – wine tour

We’ve all seen Argentinian wines on the supermarket shelves but to visit and taste these fine wines in the boutique bodegas and modern wineries is a very special experience. We have a 13-night ‘Sommelier’s Selection‘ trip, perfect for romantics with a taste for fine wines and spectacular scenery.

3. New Africa camps

Africa continues to up its game when it comes to top notch safari lodges – my pick for 2013 is lesser-known Mozambique, not least with the much-anticipated opening of Barra Lodge Group’s three new lodges, by March 2013, in the Gorongosa National Park. It’s positively teeming with wildlife and Mozambique has a spectacular coastline, perfect for a safari/beach combo.

4. Out of season India

It may seem counter-intuitive but there’s much to be said for visiting India out of season, even during the monsoons. Head to Kerala for a well-being honeymoon focused on Ayurvedic treatments - it’s believed locally that the health benefits are enhanced by the rains.

5. Myanmar

Firmly on the tourist map, not least following the recent visit by Aung Sang Suu Kyi, Myanmar is quite simply the destination of a lifetime. We’ve picked locally-owned hotels so you are supporting the people of Burma on your multi-centre tour, tailored to suit your budget.

6. Maldives

OK so it’s not new but the Maldives is already our fastest-selling honeymoon destination for 2013. Quite simply, it delivers – from characterful barefoot island hideaways to cutting-edge resorts with all the bells and whistles. The best time to visit, weather-wise, is between December and April but it’s increasingly popular during the (cheaper) rainy season too, when it’s still warm with sunny intervals.
