Trulli madly deeply

Jane's verdict

Known as the heel of Italy's boot, Puglia is one of its most appealing regions. Think 500 miles of great beaches (nowhere is more than 15 miles from the coast), baroque extravagances, the odd Roman ruin and stupendous food and wine. Many of the distinctive stone Trulli houses have been converted to beautiful cottages and hotels.

Long Travel says

Unique to the Itria Valley in Puglia, southern Italy, a honeymoon in a trullo is very special and a great base from which to immerse yourselves in the region’s culture, cuisine and countryside.

These simple but intriguing stone-built houses are generally white-washed with a distinctive conical roof, charming garden and cool interior. Their unique mortar-free design is believed to date back over 5,000 years, originally designed to shelter livestock. These days, they are more comfortable furnished and some have either a private or shared pool.

We offer a range of self-catering trulli including Trullo Azzuro which has its own private pool. There are also a small number of boutique hotels which are themselves transformed trulli – we especially recommend Il Nocino and Il Palmento for honeymooners.

This is a magical region, encapsulating the best of all things Italian, and yet very different to the rest of the country. You’ll enjoy ancient, silver-leafed olive trees, vineyards, orchards and a stretch of coastline blessed with golden sandy beaches and clear azure seas.

Puglia’s architecture is diverse and fascinating – Roman, Baroque and Byzantine. You’ll find Arab-influenced hilltop towns, majestic masserie (fortified manor houses) and, of course, the region’s unique conical, stone-built trulli houses. Alberobello is known as the trulli town with a town centre made up entirely of trulli – there’s even a trullo church.

The wonderful food and wine are arguably the best in Italy. The local restaurants are outstanding and there’s nowhere better in the world to enjoy real ‘slow’ food. The pace of life is enviably relaxed and the cost of living is still amazingly cheap.
