Best Spa Hotels for Honeymoons

By Jane Anderson

If you’re the type of couple who are into wellness and love to be massaged, stretched and soothed, a spa-based getaway could be the perfect honeymoon. There are so many incredible spas in resorts that are considered honeymoon destinations in their own right, that it’s a shame not to take advantage of the pampering on offer. You can base your entire honeymoon around spa offerings or treat yourselves to a few choice spa experiences. If you’re expecting a particularly stressful wedding, a spa honeymoon is a great choice to unwind after all the stress and high excitement.

Here are my top spa recommendations.

Lake District

Gilpin Lake House proves you don’t have to travel far to find the perfect honeymoon spa. This Relais & Chateaux hideaway in the Lake District has just six spacious suites and a stunning lakefront Jetty Spa. A special Jetty Spa Trail for couples includes a private swim in the lakeside pool, iced fruit frappe in the salt snug, an invigorating salt scrub shower and a bespoke aromatherapy massage before snuggling up in heated throws in the Boat House. Top it all off with chilled Champagne in the open-air Japanese Ofura Tub with stunning lake views. Check out the special packages.

Sardinia’s white sand beaches are among the finest in the Mediterranean. If you want to combine beach and pampering, head to the five-star Hotel Capo d’Orso Thalasso & Spa. It’s intimate, exclusive and a real treat.

This tiny Italian island in the Bay of Naples has welcomed movie legends and millionaires. Its Capri Palace Hotel & Spa is the perfect treat for couples who want glamour with their spa pampering at its Capri Beauty Farm, famous for its Leg School. And treat yourselves to one of the Art Suites, Star Suites or Penthouse Suites dedicated to glamorous Hollywood starlets including Gwyneth Paltrow, Monroe and Hepburn.

Africa and Indian Ocean

If you like your spas to have a sense of the place, then you’ll love the Asounfou Spa at Kasbah Tamadot, a member of the Virgin Unlimited collection. This resort in the Atlas Mountains near Marrakesh is ultra romantic with just 27 rooms and suites including Berber tents. Don’t miss the Moroccan Hammam treatment.

Mauritius is a perfect honeymoon choice with its breathtaking turquoise lagoon, white sand beaches and five-star hotels with romance in mind. Trou aux Biches Resort & Spa stands on one of the most spectacular stretches of beach and its extensive Spa By Clarins is one of the best on the island especially for honeymooners with its thatched roof, under shade outdoor pavilions as well as air conditioned indoor pavilions (six of which are for couples) as well as two Vichy shower room, a yoga pavilion, hammams, sauna and heated pool.

The idyllic resort of NIYAMA broke the mould when it opened its 24-hour Lime Spa. Honeymooners will adore its two signature Spa Sanctuaries surrounded by lush shrub life, each has its own outdoor bath and shower and open cabana lounge for post treatment relaxation. The spa’s unique feature is its After Dark treatments designed to banish jetlag or induce sleep, but equally useful for easing away wedding fatigue.

There are many incredible spas in the Seychelles including those at Raffles on the island of Praslin. Spa lovers who want to combine with a stay on the main island of Mahe, should check out Four Seasons Resort Seychelles.

Also consider … Huvafen Fushi in the Maldives with the world’s first underwater spa.

St Lucia

With incredible views of the Pitons, Anse Chastanet resort is a one off paradise in the south of St Lucia. Its Kai Belte (Creole for ‘House of Beauty’) is right on the beach with five air conditioned treatment rooms and a romantic open air cabana Kai Mer overlooking the Anse Chastanet Reef. Treatments are based on ancient Ayurvedic remedies.

Also consider … Sir Richard Branson’s Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands.

Asia, the Middle East and Australia

For a total sanctuary for all the senses, head to Six Senses Ninh Van Bay in Vietnam. From your private pool villa, stroll over to the spa for traditional Vietnamese therapies and Six Senses signature treatments, customised detox programmes and rejuvenating oxygen facials. Romantic couples packages are de rigueur for honeymooners. This spa will certainly get spa loving couples off to the best start in married life.

The dreamy Qualia in The Whitsundays overlooks the Great Barrier Reef. The stunning spa Qualia’s ethos is to base treatments on indigenous Australian products and therapies – the Kumali (aboriginal for sacred) Ritual, for example. There’s a great couples package – the Wine Lovers Indulgence combining Vinotherapie treatments with a bottle of wine in your own private suite.

Also consider … hot springs in Japan and Te Manava Luxury Villas & Spa in the Cook Islands.
