Caribbean hideaways

Jane's verdict:

I’d like to let you in on a secret! There’s a hidden side to the Caribbean, a world away from the glossy travel brochures. Ironically it’s a side that many honeymooners hanker after – an authentic Caribbean found in the small hotels, b&bs and lodges that are often family-run and overflowing with local bonhomie. Essence of the Caribbean has the inside track.

Essence of the Caribbean says

We’re all about finding the perfect bolthole where you can get under the skin of “the real Caribbean”. We have found some delightful small hotels, B&Bs and eco-lodges in Grenada, Barbados, St Lucia and the Bahamas – the sort of hidden gems that you simply won’t find in the glossy holiday brochures.

  • Authentic experiences
  • Hidden gems
  • Home cooking

On the Spice Island of Grenada, for example, you can stay on a former nutmeg plantation at the charming Maca Bana eco-lodge. We also recommend the stylish but utterly unpretentious Petite Anse.

St Lucia is one of the most popular honeymoon destinations in the Caribbean – avoid the big resorts and stay on a working cocoa plantation, Fond Doux Estate.

In the Bahamas, we’ve unearthed a great little B&B, not far from Nassau on New Providence Island. A Stone’s Throw Away is literally that close to the beach and there’s a pool on site too. We can also arrange island-hopping honeymoons to some of the dreamy Bahamas Out Islands – Exuma, Cat Island, Eleuthera, Abocos and Harbour Island.

Barbados is renowned for its glamorous celebrity-packed west coast and sophisticated restaurant scene but it’s also a beautifully scenic island with some charming small hotels such as Little Good Harbour. If you’re spending some or all of your honeymoon with family or friends, check out the beautifully restored 18th century Bellevue Plantation House which has six bedrooms and two self-catering cottages in the grounds.

We can hook you up with one of our local guides if you want to really get under the skin of your chosen destination. We can arrange nature walks, wellness experiences using local products, dining with local families and rum tasting for example.

We are very selective with our recommendations, ensuring each place is truly authentic in atmosphere and welcome. We offer accommodation-only quotations and ATOL-protected holidays including flights.
