Honeymoon Destinations in June

Where to go on Honeymoon in June 2020

Jane Anderson, Honeymoon expertBy Jane Anderson, Editor of 101 Honeymoons

June is among the most popular months for a wedding. And – good news – it is also one of the best months of the year for a honeymoon. The weather in all those romantic European destinations is at its best and because this isn’t yet technically high season, there’s a strong chance you’ll get a bargain.

If you have your hearts set on the Caribbean, it’s officially low season but well before hurricane season which can mean great deals, while Africa is also an inspired choice.

June Honeymoons in the Mediterranean

Mallorca is at it most fragrant in June. The orange blossom is still out and everything’s fresh and calm yet there’s a great buzz in the restaurants as the new season gets underway. Expect temperatures of 25ºC and 10 hours of daily sunshine. Hire a villa for two with Vintage Travel for the ultimate in privacy and make sure you don’t miss out on the trendy bars and restaurants in Palma.

It’s a similar picture in Ibiza where you can soak up the bohemian vibe before the summer crowds descend. I’ve found some wonderful places to stay far from the busy resorts, including this romantic finca and this boho agriturismo.

It’s already getting hot in Andalucia, so it’s a good idea to head for the cool air of the hills where you can check into DDG Retreat, a small chic hideaway with romantic tented suites with outdoor bath and shower, or Casa Pino with its own private plunge pool – and the beach is only a short drive away. See the special offers.

The Aegean and Lycian coasts of Turkey are warming up nicely but are still green and quiet. A great option is the Mandarin Boutique Hotel, a romantic adults-only hideaway with just eight rooms set in unspoilt countryside near the resorts of Fethiye and Oludeniz. It’s very affordable and each double room has a kingsize four-poster bed and Jacuzzi for two.

June is arguably the perfect month for Cyprus. Temperatures hit 30ºC but it’s not stifling, as it can be in July and August, and you can still find special offers at luxury hotels such as the Four Seasons and the Londa Beach Hotel in Limassol.

Few places are as romantic as the tiny volcanic Greek island of Santorini where chic white-washed hotels are carved into the steep rock faces. My favourites include Grace Santorini. Other dreamy escapes in Greece include Naxos, and the tiny hidden gem of Onar on the isle of Andros.

Halkidiki on the Greek mainland has award-winning beaches and is home to both Ikos Oceania and Ikos Olivia, which offer an innovative five-star all-inclusive experience (with dine-around options) at great prices. The islands are also getting the same luxurious all-inclusive touch with newly opened Ikos Dassia on Corfu and Ikos Aria on Kos.

If you prefer the idea of privacy and self-sufficiency, you could rent a villa for two in Greece. Or enjoy the exclusive luxury of a luxury yacht charter. You can take a cabin or the whole boat.

Other Mediterranean honeymoon destinations that are perfect in June include the French island of Corsica which has a great selection of hotelsvillas and apartments.

In Italy, the Amalfi Coast is a classic honeymoon destination combining old-school elegance with faultless service and fine dining. Stay in one of these wonderful hotels.

It’s also a lovely time of year to enjoy the sparkling waters of the Italian Lakes where you’ll find classic waterfront hotels on the shores of Lake ComoLake Garda and Lake Iseo.

Sicily is the largest island in the Med and combines dramatic landscapes – including the smoking peak of Mount Etna – with rolling countryside, ancient sites and romantic hotels including the 19th-century Art Nouveau Grand Hotel Villa Igiea, and Villa Angela, a hillside boutique retreat near Taormina.

Another option in Italy is to catch the ferry across the Bay of Naples to the magical island of Capri, for a stay at the glamorous Capri Palace Hotel & Spa.

June is also an excellent month to visit Venice before it gets really busy. Citalia has a selection of handpicked hotels in the city including the intimate five-star deluxe Ca’ Sagrado, the beautiful low-key Hotel Londra Palace near the Bridge of Sighs, and the legendary Danieli.

Other Honeymoon Destinations in Europe

If cities, art museums and authentic restaurants are your thing, how about combining a couple of classic destinations, perhaps Seville, Cordoba and Granada in Andalucia or Rome, Florence and Siena in Italy. There’s nothing quite like staying a few steps from the famous Duomo in the luxurious Helvetia e Bristol hotel as you soak up the romance of Florence.

Or enjoy the timeless Italian countryside of Tuscany where you can stay in one of these villas for two, each of which has a private or shared swimming pool. A perfect secluded base to discover some of the area’s famous cities.

How about cycling through the gorgeous northern Italian scenery too, stopping at a vineyard or five along the way on the Gastronomic Barolo holiday from Headwater? You will pedal gently through gorgeous rolling countryside, visiting wineries and eating picnics, while your luggage is transported each day from one charming hotel to the next.

June is a wonderful time to be in Paris and it’s not too hot (21ºC, 7 hours of sunshine). The key is to pick the right hotel – I recommend the five-star boutique Lancaster off the Champs-Elysées, and the charming Relais Christine on the Left Bank.

Alternatively, head north for a very different honeymoon enjoying the midnight sun in Iceland. You can soak in natural hot tubs, see geysers and volcanoes and even stay up all night at hip bars in one of the world’s most exciting and beautiful destinations. Best places to stay include the funky Hotel Marina in Reykjavik, the world’s northernmost capital, and the Hotel Ranga, which is set on the banks of a salmon river with a backdrop of glaciers and mountains.

Or if you fancy a beach break but want to look beyond the Med, there are some great island escapes off the coast of north Africa. Discover volcanic landscapes and star gazing with a luxury honeymoon in Tenerife – the adults-only Red Level at Gran Melia Palacio de Isora has oceanfront villas with a private pool, while Gran Hotel Bahia del Duque is home to nine different restaurants, as well as an observatory.

And the Portuguese island of Madeira is another great option for an active honeymoon: not as hot as the Canary Islands this month, now’s the time to go climbing and whale watching, with a range of luxury hotels to come back to. Belmond Reid’s Palace is one of Madeira’s most famous, or check into one of the historic Quintas, converted 19th-century manor houses. Quinta da Bela Vista and Quinta da Casa Branco get my vote.

UK Honeymoon Destinations in June

Beach or countryside? If you enjoy self-catering, try a seaside hideaway such as Barnacles in Fowey, Cornwall. Here’s a collection of romantic properties for two across the UK.

If you love the wild countryside, I recommend this collection of honeymoon hideaways in Wales from Sugar & Loaf. How about Butterfly Meadow Yurt near Hay-on-Wye with roll-top bath and its own wood-fired pizza oven, or Starlight Cottage, a converted hayloft in the Black Mountains.

Expect long sunny days in Scotland where the welcome will be warm and the countryside stunning. I love this self-drive luxury honeymoon that kicks off at a five-star hotel in Edinburgh and includes stays at a lodge on Loch Ness and a private island off the coast of Argyll. You can also upgrade to a classic car – how about a Mini Cooper or Austin Healey?

For romance it’s hard to beat the Lake District, and there are few spots more enticing than Gilpin Lake House set in the private grounds of a Relais & Châteaux hotel. It has six spacious suites, a lakeside spa and indoor swimming pool.

Long Haul Beach Honeymoons in June

The Caribbean is perfect in June: prices are low, the weather is fine and there are no crowds. The best hotels for honeymooners include Anse Chastanet and East Winds on St Lucia (30ºC and 8 hours of sunshine) and Jamaica Inn near Ocho Rios.

Two of the best-value Caribbean destinations are Mexico and the Dominican Republic where you’ll find five-star hotels at sensible prices with great weather (32ºC, 7 hours of sunshine). For something intimate in the Dominican Republic, check out the all-inclusive Zoëtry Agua Punta Cana, which has just 96 rooms and an Endless Privileges® package.

If you crave a “pure beach” experience, tiny Anguilla offers miles of endless blinding white sand and crystal clear seas. You can also dine around at stylish beachfront restaurants.

Or venture away from the best-known Caribbean islands to lovely St Kitts, an unspoiled spot where you can watch turtles hatching or snorkel from secluded beaches, discover the rich history of the island at Unesco World Heritage site Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park and hop over to tiny Nevis for the day. For boutique style, Ocean Terrace Inn has its own lagoon pool while Belle Mont Farm is set on a tropical fruit farm.

For something really intimate and full of character, this collection of the best small hotels and resorts in the Caribbean has some real hidden gems.

Alternatively, you could set sail on a tall ship to explore the small ports of the Caribbean that are inaccessible to big cruise ships. Star Clippers combines the romance of sailing with luxury accommodation, beach barbecues, deck-top sundowners and watersports organised by the crew. Many destinations in Asia are wet in June but Koh Samui (31ºC, 6 hours of sunshine) is an exception. This charming island in the Gulf of Thailand has a superb collection of romantic luxury hotels.

It’s also a good time to be in Vietnam – expect 33ºC and 6 hours of sunshine in the capital, Hanoi. You could kick back on a slow-paced Cambodia to Vietnam trip which takes you to the Angkor temples then by boat along the Mekong River from Phnom Penh to Saigon.

Sri Lanka works well if you avoid the south-west coast. This 12-day East Coast Sri Lanka Journey is designed for summer honeymoons and includes the remote unspoilt beaches of Passekudah and Trincomalee.

Bali (30ºC, 9 hours of sunshine) is also a great choice in June. My recommendations include the laid-back haven of Puri Ganesha and the great-value Gajah Mina Beach Resorton on a surf beach in the island’s south-west.

And June is also ideal for discovering the South Pacific – it’s one of the driest months in French Polynesia, with average temperatures of 27ºC and over 7 hours of sunshine. Discover more than one island on a cruise in Tahiti, with the chance to visit Moorea, Bora Bora, Taha’a, Tikehau and Rangiroa too. Or for a Polynesian-inspired honeymoon, Bora Bora Pearl Beach is perfect. See more ideas for honeymoons in Tahiti here.

Adventure, Safari, Mountains

June is a lovely time for a two-centre honeymoon in Africa. Head to Kenya (22ºC; 7 hours of daily sunshine) where low season prices can still be found and the landscapes are gloriously lush following the rains. A popular combination with a safari in Kenya is a luxury beach stay in the Seychelles (25ºC). Try this 12-night Safari and Beach combination featuring three nights at Kichwa Tembo in the Masai Mara followed by a stopover in Nairobi at The Norfolk Hotel and ending with seven nights at the boutique Carana Beach Hotel in the Seychelles.

It’s the start of the dry season in Zambia and Malawi where the plains will be green and lush – perfect for this honeymoon package which combines Stanley Safari Lodge in Livingstone, where you can visit the Victoria Falls, with Luangwa River Camp in the spectacular and unspoilt South Luangwa National Park and luxurious surroundings of Pumulani on the shores of Lake Malawi.

The dry season is also beginning in Tanzania when this month is one of the best to see the Great Migration in the Serengeti. Stay at the Sanctuary Kichakani Serengeti Camp, or Sanctuary Kusini for butler service along with your animal-spotting. Finish with the white sands and Indian Ocean views of Zanzibar.

It’s the dry (and cool) season in Namibia (20ºC, 10 hours of sunshine) and the best time of year for spotting game, including the endangered Black Rhino. Stay at intimate lodges and camps, climb the world’s tallest sand dunes, take a hot air balloon ride over the Namib Desert and visit the salt pans of Etosha. This classic fly-in tour is perfect for honeymooners, or you could opt for a self-drive option. You can also combine Namibia with Cape Town.

Botswana is home to some of the most luxurious camps in Africa. It’s not just about indulgence, but also up-close encounters with big game, whether you’re floating silently through the Okavango Delta in a mokoro canoe, or exploring the beautiful Chobe National Park. See more of my safari honeymoon ideas.

If it’s beaches you want, head to Mozambique (25ºC, 8 hours of sunshine) which is an inspired alternative to the Seychelles and Maldives. This idyllic island of silky white beaches is perfect for boat trips on sailing dhows, barefoot luxury lodges and snorkelling in turquoise waters. Check out this island hopping honeymoon.

Madagascar combines pristine white-sand beaches with exciting wildlife experiences including whale watching off the east coast. This 12-night Madagascar honeymoon combines rainforest, adventure and a secluded beach.

And while it’s winter in Mauritius, you can still expect temperatures of around 25ºC as well as some of the year’s driest days. For sheer luxury, Trou aux Biches is one of the island’s best hotels

Off the opposite coast of Africa, Cape Verde is an unusual island alternative. The Hilton Cabo Verde Sal Resort is perfect if you’re looking for sun, sand and style, or you could get away from it all on neighbouring island Boa Vista at the Spinguera Eco Lodge. If you can’t choose between the 10 different islands, check out the island-hopping itineraries.

In South America, Peru‘s winter also sees its driest months – this is the best time to combine beach, jungle and a trip to the ancient city of Machu Picchu. Tucan Travel is great value and says this 14-night Highlights of Peru tour is most popular with honeymooners. Some newlyweds also opt to join a small group tour.

The best way to see America is on a road trip. Exsus has a wonderful modern reinvention of the classic US fly drive that is ideal for style-seeking honeymooners. American Sky allows you to combine a stay in New York City with a second stop – Boston is perfect if you fancy a city escape, or add some beach in Barbados.
