Budget Maldives

Jane Anderson, Honeymoon expertJane's verdict
Meeru Island Resort is textbook Maldives: powder white sand and turquoise lagoon. Except here you get 4-star quality at 3-star prices. Bag the all-inclusive option and look out for complimentary room upgrades. Newlyweds should aim for the Jacuzzi Water Villas or the Honeymoon Suites, a short dhoni boat ride away.

Meeru Island Resort is the perfect choice for honeymooners seeking relaxation, unpretentious comfort, the option for all-inclusive prices and great value for money – all wrapped up in the Maldives dream of idyllic beaches.

  • Great value
  • Private island
  • Spectacular beaches

A 55-minute speedboat ride from Male Airport, Meeru Island is a 70-acre island resort surrounded by white sand, palm-fringed beaches.

There are two swimming pools, non-motorised watersports, a dive school, golf driving range, tennis courts, fitness centre and two spas, one of them over the water.

The attractive wooden chalet-style rooms are either located by the beach, some of them right at the edge of or even above the lagoon; all have an attractive semi-open bathroom and some have a Jacuzzi on the private sundeck.

There is a choice of two buffet and two à la carte restaurants and a range of bars. There is a children’s club too – but don’t worry if you’re travelling during the school holidays and want to avoid children on your honeymoon; one section of the hotel, including one of the restaurants, is strictly for over 18s only.

A week costs around £3,300 per couple all-inclusive, including flights and speedboat transfers.
