Italian lakes

Jane Anderson, Honeymoon expert Jane's verdict
In a world that’s increasingly accessible, the allure of the Italian Lakes remains undimmed. Who can resist those sparkling vistas and hotels so full of character like the Sirmione right on the shores of Lake Garda? Combine with a few days in Venice, Verona or Milan and you have an easy two-centre honeymoon where romance is off the scale.

Few destinations are more beautiful and romantic than the Italian Lakes, each of which offers a unique appeal and atmosphere.

  • Combine with Venice
  • Grand lakefront hotels
  • Romantic locations

In northern Italy, Lake Como is perhaps the best known with its grand lakeside hotels surrounded by mountains. The local ferry service is perfect for hopping from one waterfront gem to another, with evocative names such as Bellagio, Menaggio and Tremezzo.

Lake Garda is no less scenic and we have a wide selection of romantic hotels such as the Grand Hotel Gardone, a blend of 19th-century grandeur and 21st-century glamour which once hosted Sir Winston Churchill.  Further south, ideal for visiting local vineyards such as Valpolicello and Bardolino, Hotel Sirmione e Promessi Sposi is one of our honeymoon favourites, a romantic gem located bang on the waterfront in pretty Sirmione.

If spa time is high on your list, check out the new spa centre and thermal water pools at the delightful Hotel Olivi Spa & Natural Wellness, a few minutes’ walk from the centre of Sirmione.

Stylish Stresa and elegant Baveno are our pick of the resorts around Lake Maggiore. Close to Stresa, the Hotel Villa e Palazzo Aminta is an elegant choice with a superb spa and gorgeous views over the must-visit Borromean Islands.

Lake Iseo is less well known and, as a result, it feels more off the beaten track. Our pick of the places to stay is the low-key Hotel Iseolago or, particularly for foodies, the Hotel Araba Fenice is a charming 19th-century lakeside villa.

Our team can combine a stay in Venice, Verona or Milan with the Italian Lakes and, wherever you stay, transfer times from airports are short, there’s no need to hire a car as local transport is so good and you have so much to explore right on your doorstep. You can travel by rail too.
