Luxury Maldives

Jane Anderson, Honeymoon expert Jane's verdict
If I were searching for a Maldives honeymoon, there would be two resorts at the top of my list: Niyama and Huvafen Fushi. The former is pushing the boundaries of cool in the Indian Ocean, whilst the latter is the pioneer of barefoot luxury. Bag yourselves an overwater ocean bungalow and let real life drift away.

Two of the Indian Ocean’s most luxurious boutique hotels, Niyama and Huvafen Fushi both offer quintessential Maldives style in two very distinct ways.

  • Barefoot luxury
  • Stylish hotels
  • Wow factor

We think that Niyama is the country’s sexiest and most contemporary resort. It spans two idyllic islands – dubbed Play and Chill – with plenty of beaches to discover.

Most of the beach and over-water villas have a private pool and cool extras from a popcorn maker and bicycles to complimentary ice-cream refills every day.

You can even opt to enjoy dinner on the open sea in a luxuriously-fitted Dhoni, a traditional Maldivian sail boat, complete with the care of a personal chef and butler.

Cutting edge dining options include a cool deli and the underwater Subsix, complete with its own DJ on some nights. We also love LIME Spa, offering bespoke rituals and treatments for couples, a relaxation garden and juice bar.

Huvafen Fushi is all about barefoot luxury. Each villa has a private pool – we especially love the Over Water Ocean Bungalows with a glass floored sitting area so you can see the fish swimming by.

The sublime spa is one of the best in the Indian Ocean, not least option of underwater treatment rooms – wow! You can indulge in a choice of cuisines – even including healthy juices and raw dishes at the Asian-inspired ‘Raw’.

A romantic dinner on the sandbank, snorkelling over the house reef and helping to feed the Stingrays at 6.30pm each day are just some of the highlights of a stay here.

Honeymooners at both these resorts will also receive exclusive treats such as a spa sampler or beach dinner and a bottle of Champagne.
