Branson’s Africa

Our verdict:

If you know anything about Richard Branson, it’s that he thinks big. When he turned his attention towards safari camps, magical things happened. Ulusaba in South Africa and Mahali Mzuri in Kenya which I was lucky enough to visit when it opened, are two of the most romantic safari retreats in Africa. Both combine high-end luxury with spine-tingling encounters with nature.

Virgin Limited Edition says

We have created two intimate safari camps – Ulusaba in South Africa and Mahali Mzuri in Kenya. Both deliver on the ‘Heaven on Earth’ experience in Sir Richard Branson’s own inimitable style – think exquisite accommodation, glorious game viewing and thoughtful service.

  • Spectacular settings
  • Ultimate luxury
  • Wildlife encounters

Ulusaba has two separate lodges. Safari Lodge sits next to a watering hole with many rooms built tree-house style and accessed by a rope bridge. The Treehouse Suite is particularly special, overlooking a nearby dam where the hippos come to wallow. Rock Lodge is built on top of a koppie, or hill, and has spectacular panoramic views over mile upon mile of bush.

With twice-daily game drives to spot the Big Five, safari walks, two swimming pools, an Aroma Boma spa, tennis courts and a full stocked wine cellar, Ulusaba is one of South Africa’s most unique and special safari camps – and a stay here can be combined with a few days at Mont Rochelle in the heart of South Africa’s wine lands.

Mahali Mzuri is located in the vast and game-rich Olare Motorogi Conservancy. Each of the 12 luxury tented suites comes with a vast private deck, it’s ideal for couples looking for some privacy and seclusion whilst viewing the stunning scenery and wildlife.

Chances are you will see the Big 5 without even heading out on safari. The wildlife here in the Maasai Mara is certainly not shy – elephants, giraffes, buffalo, gazelles, impalas, topis and antelopes are regular visitors.

At both camps, we offer honeymooners exclusive romance packages with all sorts of special treats and experiences included. The local teams love to arrange intimate private dinners and picnics so that couples can truly feel they are alone together under the vast African skies.
